Concrete was discovered as material by the Romans around 300 BC. The technology was lost with the fall of the Roman Empire and was only rediscovered around the year 1800. During the construction boom of the 60’s and the 70’s, the use of concrete accelerated. “Block with Seat” scales down the concrete to a monolith and adds a reference to the modernism of the 60’s in its form. The minimal seat carving adds a human aspect to the work and makes “Block with Seat” adopt a installationary person build. “Block with Seat” offers the viewer occasion to identify with “the invisible sitter” and – depending on composition and surroundings – reflect on the development of materials, shapes, places and human relations across time. The project was first shown at Kunstnernes Efterårsudstilling 2016 at Den Frie Udstillingsbygning under the title “composition 2316 mm”. In this composition two blocks are placed facing each other with a distance of 2316 mm. This composition contains a historical reference, since the distance is a reflection of the 2316 years the work covers. For inexplicable reasons important knowledge of the revolutionary properties of concrete was lost for centuries, and in this composition this fact turns to a general reflection on the, at times, difficult dialogue between people, underscored by the fact that the distance between the two blocks complicates dialogue between “the invisible” figures.
